Pregnant women who smoke expose child to cancer

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

A pregnant woman who smokes increases the child’s risk of developing cancers, according to the latest evidence.

New research by the Cancer Institute of New South Wales has provided the strongest indication that smoking during pregnancy also causes lower birth weight, premature birth and the baby’s potential hospitalisation in a neonatal intensive care unit.

“Through this new research we have credible evidence that these known birth complications associated with smoking during pregnancy could also increase the risk of childhood cancers,” said Jodi McKay, deputy minister for health (Cancer).

The Cancer Institute linked the records of all births in NSW between 1994 and 2005 with cases of cancer in NSW children over the same period. Of the 1.05 million recorded births, there were 948 cases of childhood cancer.

Leukaemia and cancers of the nerves and central nervous system were found to be more common in babies born prematurely and in those with a lower birth weight. Cancers were also more common in babies admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit.

Babies born with a low birth-weight have 1.7 times the risk of developing leukaemia and 1.8 times the risk of developing cancers of the central nervous system and brain cancers. Those born prematurely are twice as likely to be diagnosed with cancer.

Babies admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit are at the greatest risk of developing cancer. They are 2.7 times more likely to be diagnosed with cancer, and 3.7 more likely to develop cancer of the central nervous system and brain cancers, 4 times more likely to develop eye cancer and 5 times more likely to get kidney cancer, said a Cancer Institute release.

“Everybody knows that smoking causes cancer, stroke, heart disease and emphysema, but all mothers and mums-to-be should also understand the potential damage to a child caused by prenatal smoking.

Are you one of those who want grandchildren just to pass on the genes and name?

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

If you recognize this name and saw my previous questions, you’ll know that I’m childfree for many reasons.

1) Do you want grandchildren to pass on the name and the genes? How would you fee if any of your kids never wanted children?

2) When you had children, did you have them so they could take care of your when you’re older?

3) How would you feel if your son decided to change his surname?

I have two daughters and NO, I do not expect them to take care of me when I get on in years. What kind of life is that for them to look forward to? I think it would be very selfish of me to give them that burden in the prime of their lives.

Sure, I would like grandchildren. Not for the namesake, not to show other Grandma’s the annoying photos, but to just enjoy them. If my daughters decide not to have children, I would be fine with that. I support them.

You gotta crawl before you walk?!?!?

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

Is that necessarily true? My daughter is almost walking, but hates to be on the floor or stomach to crawl! What should I do? Keep her on the floor, when I know she doesnt like it, or what????

I have read time and time again that crawling is very important. When babies do the cross-pattern motion (left leg, right arm, right leg, left arm, etc etc) it exercises a part of their brain that is developing.

It also helps align their spine correctly, and helps distribute weight later in life (like if the play a sport that involves upper and lower body)

The list of sites could go on and on. Please read a few!! I happen to agree, it’s very important. It’s not about getting from point A to point B, crawling is a specific exercise that their bodies need to do!

My daughter didn’t crawl - she rolled, and then she walked. From what I understand, that is fairly normal.

Don’t force your kid to crawl - they will get from point A to point B if they want to the way they know how to. It doesn’t matter if they crawl, scoot, roll, or drag themself there.

Weed smoke around children?

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

My in laws are chronic weed smokers and everytime we take the kids over there they don’t seem to care to tuck it away for a few hours when we come over (which isn’t very often). They smoke it in the house and just recently we went to visit them due to us having our son who was only a three weeks old at the time and I thought his mom would of had enough respect not to smoke while I was sitting down holding my baby only three feet away from her. We were sitting outside but I still think it was very rude. Should I just not come around anymore? Just let my husband go over there by himself if he wants to visit his parents? They smoke it in the house but make people that smoke ciggerettes go outside. Isn’t that hypocritical?

OMG very hypocritical!!! I can’t believe that. Yeah i would say you could sit down and tell them that when you do come over, which is very few and far between, you would appriciate them not smoking around the children. But from the way you describe them they probably wouldn’t care what you have to say.THat is so sad. Your kids’ grandparents can’t even stay sober long enough to enjoy their grandbabies!!!! I would try to talk to them first and if they son’t respect your wishes just stop going over there. If they want to see your children make them come to your smoke free home!!!

———

Why would anyone want druggies around their kids at all!!!! I’d be not allowing them around ever, until they gave up the drugs. If you are there, and the police get called, you CAN loose your kids! You know about it, and they have it in their home, you are an accomplice(so is your husband). I’d either 1) call it in, or 2) stay the heck away from that kind of stuff.

Do not take your small baby around illegal activity. If that house just happened to be ‘busted’ by the police, do you realize they could take your baby away from you that very instant, even if you weren’t smoking with them???

What happens when you gush blood after sex during 1st Tri-mester of pregnancy?

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

My fiancee and I had sex when she was 7 weeks and 4 days. About an hour after she was standing in the kitchen and she started gushing blood. It was off and on. One minute she was bleeding the next she wasn’t. We went to the emergency room and had them pull blood and get an ultrasound. The doctor told us that every thing was fine and the baby had a strong heartbeat but didn’t say if it would stop. It’s now the day after we went to the emergency room and she is still bleeding off and on. Last night there was some pain in her abdomen . It lasted till she went to sleep. She woke up this morning and it was gone but she is still bleeding. Can anyone tell me whats going on?

You should call her ob/gyn about this. I would trust them to know much more than the people at the hospital. Tomorrow first thing call her doctor and tell him/her everything that is happening, do not leave out a single detail. Bleeding isn’t a good sign during pregnancy, although many women experience PMS during pregnancy and are just fine.
Call your doctor asap

Should parents continue to finance their children after the children are 18?

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

Maybe assist them, but not totally finance everything. There are too many negative side effects of doing that. **

There were a lot of children in my family, so we had to finance everything ourselves. I was working full time at age 15 just to buy clothing and shampoo. It was tough, but I don’t regret it, it gave me character. **

I think that things are definately different for children now… 100 years ago, 11 year old boys were running a farm — or at least doing a good share of the work. Now, I am happy if I can get my 11 year old son to pick up his socks and lower the toilet seat. Our expectaions for children have changed, lowered. As a result, they are living up to what we expect. **

I think one of the most important things we need to teach children is personal responsibilty. Children need to grow into adults that accept responsibilty for their actions. If they are always saying, “I am this way because of my circumstance” or “I am not this way because I wasn’t ever given a fair shot” they will never succeed. They need to learn that they are in charge of their own destiny. THey decide how their life will turn out. Events and circumstances may steer them one way or the other, but ultimately, they decide what and who they are going to become. If they can grasp this, then they can go on to provide for their families, emotionally and financially. They need to learn that success comes from how we treat others, not how much money we make. **
