Classic vs. modern design

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

Most homes today, which are getting rid of old TV sets, are opting for LCD TVs. Its sleek style occupies very less storage space. There is an option of mounting it on the wall but if you do not want to do any work on walls then you will have to buy a new TV stand because the old one will definitely not work with this new flat TV.

Glass and chrome is more popular choices for LCD TV stands these days but still the classic and timeless wood stands out. Wood looks more aesthetically appealing and blends well with old furniture. These days wooden TV stands come in modern designs to house a LCD TV. It is also a very durable material, which makes it a good choice for a TV stand. TV Stands made of glass can not be used for homes which have children.

There are ready to assemble kits also available in wood which also offer a cheap alternative. If you want to save money then you can look around for designs on net and retail shops and get a wooden TV stands made at home with a carpenter. This custom made TV stand will have shelves and partitions as per your requirements.

Garmin Products

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

I have been trying to choose between all of the different garmin products to try to decide which aircraft satellite navigation system to buy. There are a few differences between them all including the price. I firstly liked the Garmin 496 but then when I started reading about all of the other types of garmin products I started to think that they were all good. It is a bit tricky though because I do have a budget but I also have certain requirements and I want good value for money. The Garmin 695 caught my attention as it fitted all of these requirements but then I looked at the Garmin 696 and realised that it had some functions which, although they were not on my requirements list, would be really useful to me. The problem is that it was just a bit dearer than my budget. I am in a bit of a dilemma now and I am taking a very long time making a decision because I know that once I make it, there is no changing my mind and this will be a purchase that I hope will last for a very long time so it needs to be right.

Half a gram of Neanderthal bone enough to discover genome

Friday, February 13th, 2009

Less than half a gram of Neanderthal bone, collected from skeletons in Croatia, Spain, Russia and Germany, was enough to decode the genome of humanity’s relative, scientists said.

A team at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig and the US company 454 Life Sciences have sequenced more than three billion sections of Neanderthal DNA. The next step will be to compare the genome with that of humans.

Ralf Schmitz heads the team that is studying the original Neanderthal bones discovered in 1856 in the Neander gorge near Dusseldorf in Germany which led to the species’ name. There is a museum at the site today.

Schmitz said he expected those studies to reveal within 10 years how the two species were related. He said the Neanderthal genome “has been read, but not yet decoded”.

He said he also expected key data on Neanderthal metabolism using the DNA data “within five to 10 years.” This might explain why the Neanderthals became extinct 30,000 years ago. One theory suggests they could not adapt to changes of food in times of famine.

Schmitz said no genetic studies had been conducted yet of a further, female Neanderthal he discovered in 1997 at the Neander site. “She’s still in a holding pattern,” he said.

In Leipzig, the Max Planck Institute said the sequencing so far had established more than 60 percent of the Neanderthal genome.

One aim of the future study will be to see if Neanderthals had the FOXP2 gene, which is believed to enable humans to speak.

LG Electronics to introduce broadband HDTV featuring Netflix

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

South Korea’s LG Electronics announced plans on Monday to market a broadband-enabled high-definition TV in the latest bid to build a bridge between the Internet and the television set.

LG and online movie rental giant Netflix said the “Broadband HDTVs” to go on sale this spring would have Netflix streaming software embedded in the TV, allowing users to stream movies directly from Netflix with no external device.

“This is an LG industry-first, which provides another flexible option for consumers seeking to access exciting content directly through their HDTV,” LG Electronics USA president Teddy Hwang said.

LG and Netflix said in a joint statement that the plasma and liquid-crystal display (LCD) Broadband HDTVs will be on display at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) being held in Las Vegas this week.

Internet-enabled TVs are expected to be a highlight at this year’s edition of the annual electronics show as television manufacturers seek to give viewers access to the increasing amounts of video available on the Web.

The LG HDTV will not allow users to surf the Internet through their TV set but it does away with the need for a set-top box, video-game console or other device to access shows online from Netflix.

Last year, LG and Netflix introduced a Blu-ray disc player that can stream movies directly from Netflix and Netflix has offered streaming capability to personal computers for two years.

LG and Netflix said the new LG HDTVs will use a broadband connection and Queue-based user interface to stream content.

“Netflix members will use the Netflix Web site to add movies and TV episodes to their individual instant Queues,” the statement said, adding that selections will begin to play in as little as 30 seconds.

Viewers use the TV remote control to make their selections and can fast-forward and rewind the video.

LG did not say how much the new Broadband HDTVs would cost.

Netflix, which has more than eight million subscribers, started out by delivering DVDs of movies in the mail but has moved increasingly to streaming content directly over the Web to televisions or PCs.

Special Functionalities - Trail camera & Digital rangefinder

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

Trail cameras are popular for its much new functionality. One such feature is the time lapse function. In this we just need to place the camera in a position and program it to take pictures in some time intervals. This feature is widely used nowadays in many wild life channels which show various stages of growth of animals or even for plants. This feature is used based on the imagination of the user. The normal video where this technology is used is to capture a pupa becoming a butterfly. This shows the users talent and creative ability. Digital rangefinder cameras work on digital imaging technology. This technology was applied for range finder cameras in 2004. Epson RD1 is the first digital rangefinder camera, which is actually collaboration between Epson and Casino. Most of the digital rangefinder cameras have the same interchangeable lens used on their film or non digital counterparts. Most of the digital rangefinder cameras are expensive when compared to SLRS. There are some advantages and disadvantages of digital rangefinder cameras over SLR cameras. There is no moving mirror in the Digital rangefinder cameras so the momentary black out are avoided making it more prominent in the film industry.

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

I have version 1.1.4 (hacked with ZiPhone) , i am experiencing some troubles with it. I want to restore it so i can take it in to the apple store and have them take a look. But i am worried that if restoring might brick my iphone. I am also worried that if i restore it, will i have activate it agian, like renew the contract and stuff?

It shouldn’t brick your iphone if you restore it from itunes. You won’t have to pay activation fees or anything when you restore it. Itll say that its activating, but its just getting your phone number and putting everything back where it should be.

Nothing happens when I turn my digital camera on?

Friday, July 11th, 2008

I have a 5+yr-old Kodak Easy Share. Its been charging for almost an entire week. When I dock it, the last picture I took (like 3 weeks ago) shows up on the screen. When I take it off the dock thing, and TRY to turn it on nothing happens.

What could be causing this? Should I get it fixed or just buy a new digital camera?

This is because the battery is not holding a charge. Considering the camera is 5 years old, I personally would buy a new one. Yes, the new battery would be cheaper, but there is always the off-chance that it isn’t the battery. I see this a lot where I work (professional camera technician) people say it’s the battery and it’s something completely different. I would NOT send it to a repair facility. It will be much cheaper to buy a new camera. If you have any further questions, feel free to email me. I would be more than glad to help.

Where to Look for Your Gears

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

No one wants to get lost while on a boat in the open seas. Unfamiliar territories rise the fear of anyone however experienced they are. Boaters and fishermen rely on military tactical gear to travel fast, efficiently, and most importantly safe. Gears like life vest, night operation tools, and GPS devices ensure their safety in all of their journeys.

Marine GPS systems guide the way of seamen to their destination and back home. This equipment plots the bearing of the vessel so the crew has a definite guide to reach their destination. In case of distress, rescuers can easily get to them guided by the reflected signals from satellites pin pointing their exact location.

A GPS equipment may be one if not the most important technology developed to help man conquer the sea. Deep sea fishermen benefit a lot by marking rich water spots so they can return and enjoy the bounties of Mother Nature. Indeed GPS locators paved the way for saving thousands of lives worldwide.

The innovation continues for boat and marine electronics. Hobbyists, hunters, or fishermen can find the best equipment in several places:

* In military fairs where they sell second hand gears used by our soldiers. Prices are low and the quality of products are field tested and guaranteed
* Hobby shops also supply some of this equipment. It is wise to compare brands and ask for possible discounts
* Internet. Online shops carry items for different companies. Properly inquire for their features, costs, and warranties.
